Other accommodation near Tintagel

Tintagel is one of the most interesting towns in the entire United Kingdom and though people visit it for countless different reasons, the town is most definitely meaningful in the lives of many different people. It is definitely not a crowded city, boasting a mere eighteen hundred citizens over nearly five thousand acres, but it is a city that has captured the imagination of millions of people over the years.

The biggest and most important factor in Tintagel's longstanding reputation of filling hearts and minds with wonder is undoubtedly the city's connection with the legend of King Arthur. It is supposed that Tintagel is the birthplace of King Arthur and the famed Arthur, Lord Tennyson wrote at length about Arthur and his Tintagel years. The poem Idylls of the King is the most popular work about Arthur and Tintagel factors heavily in the poem. In the 1930s archeologists began to unearth certain parts of the land in Tintagel and one of the most astonishing finds was a stone that supposedly bore the inscription of King Arthur. This famed "Arthur's Stone" can be seen at the Royal Cornwall Museum to this day. Tintagel Island also has a few relics that are thought to be related to King Arthur. Chief among these is the famous "King Arthur's Footprint on the Island". Though there is no telling what exactly created the impression in the rock, most experts agree that it is probably not actually the footprint of the King. King Arthur's Hall, though built in the 1930s and completely unrelated to the history of King Arthur, is still an admirable building that is meant to recreate the lauded round table made famous in the legend. Within the building one can see a series of immaculately designed stained glass paintings that depict the entire legend.

This isn't to say that there aren't any other fascinating landmarks in Tintagel aside from the Arthurian locales. On the contrary, there are countless places that are of extreme historical importance. One of the most popular among these is the famed Old Post Office. This structure, built in the 1300s, is a Grade I listed building and it carries with it major significance in the history of the country. There are also many natural formations that make Tintagel a sought-after location for geology fans. Devonian slate can be found in great supply in and around the coastline of Tintagel and this is what gives the water its beautiful green color. Many people like to go snorkeling in this water not just for the slate but for the many shipwrecks that have occurred in the area. St. Nectan's Kieve is another popular tourist spot. This gorgeous waterfall is one of the tallest and most pristine in the area and it has provided countless gorgeous photographs for the many visitors it receives each year. Tintagel truly is the city that has everything and anybody with a slight interest in history, myth, nature, or architecture is sure to have the time of his or her life upon laying eyes on this wondrous town.
