Swindon in Wiltshire is ideally located for daytrips to surrounding areas. From here place like Bristol (65km west) Reading (65km east) and London (130km east) can easily be reached. The easiest way to reach all these places is by train as Swindon is on the main line from Paddington, in London, to Bristol. Travel by car can be fun too, especially if you arrive at the "magic roundabout". This roundabout is named after the children's TV series, but is scarier than that series. It consists of a roundabout that in itself consists of 5 smaller roundabouts. It has been voted "worst roundabout in the UK" in 2005, "one of the worst world junctions" in 2007 and "top 10 scariest junctions in Britain in 2008). The roundabout has, however, an impressive safety record. You can find this roundabout close to County Ground, the home of Swindon FC Football club.
In Swindon it self there is plenty to do and see. Shopping is a main feature in The Brunel Centre and the Parade which are built along the banks of a filled-in canal. The Tented Market has been closed for years, but should be open before the end of 2009 and its location close to the Brunel centre will make sure it attracts plenty of people looking for variety and good prices. Thanks to its long history it has plenty of museums and they include the National museum of Science and Industry, the Railway Village museum, the Richard Jefferies Museum and the Swindon Arts Centre.
There are some events going on all year round, with venues including the Wyvern Theatre and the Town Gardens. The last one is host to the world renowned Swindon Mela which celebrates South Indian arts and culture.
Did you know that Swindon was the scene for not one, but two scenes in different James bond movies??
In "A View to a Kill" the former Renault building was used and in "The World is not Enough" the futuristic Motorola plant was used as a Turkish refinery. Writer Ian Fleming is buried in the borough in Sevenhampton.
