The town of St. David's is at once one of the most unique, fascinating, and glorious towns on the face of the Earth. What makes this fact all the more incredible, though, is knowing that St. David's is in fact the smallest city in the United Kingdom. Located in Wales, the city has a population that is just under two thousand and most people look at St. David's in much the same way they look at Vatican City; both are cities in the legal sense of the term but they wouldn't pass for cities if not for the vast treasures that they contain. St. David's, naturally, is the location of the final resting place of St. David, the patron saint of England.
St. David's arose as a town thanks to the massive amount of pilgrims who come to visit St. David's cathedral. Many towns in the United Kingdom started this way but the cathedral that houses the Saint is arguably one of the most sought after churches in Wales or England. One would think that St. David's would in fact be one of the larger parish towns considering the way larger towns built themselves up around more obscure abbeys and cathedrals. All the same, people have been flocking to St. David's cathedral for quite a long time and the area that the cathedral first encompassed was in fact built by St. David himself. This was around the time of Saxon invasions and the small smattering of residents in the town saw quite a bit of carnage in the early years, with many bishops being brutally murdered. The cathedral has been refurbished and rebuilt countless times but it still maintains a good amount of the original feel and flavor that it once had. This makes it a historical wonder as well as a religious treasure and indeed many visitors that come to the small town are typically split down the middle as either historians or devout Christians.
The area around St. David's is similarly beautiful and this has much to do with the fact that the whole town is just one part of the enormous Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. This gorgeous park is still very much intact and one can see why Saint David and his followers thought that this was the perfect area to begin a new life of devout worship. This placement among such natural wonder seemingly boosts St. David's beauty even more and it can be difficult to decide what is more impressive: Is it the gorgeous architecture scattered throughout the town that is over eight hundred years in many instances? Perhaps it's the stunning backdrop that makes the cathedral look so impressive. No matter what the explanation, the fact remains that St. David's is a town filled with wonder that is both natural and man-made. Though it is the smallest town in the United Kingdom, St. David's is filled to the brim with more awe and wonder than a dozen Birminghams. The best part is that you can see all the sights in one day!
