The borough of Southend on Sea in Essex has long been a seaside resort. Located at the Thames Gateway this borough is home to one of the world's longest piers, which measures 1.34 miles in length. This ancient town is a popular tourist destination since the Georgian era and for good reason.
With the name of Southend on Sea it's a pretty good indicator that one of the main tourist stops is, indeed, the sea. There are many things to do at the sea here at Southend on the Sea. The main stop is the exceedingly long pier that the borough is famous for. Once serviced by an electrical tram service, visitors can now hop on a diesel-hydraulic powered train to go from one end to the other.
The pier itself is littered with things to do. Straddling the large pier is the amusement park Adventure Island. Once known as Peter Pan's Playground, Adventure Island has 50 different rides and attractions. This is one of the most popular amusement parks in the area. Also located on the pier is a bowling alley that can provide fun for all ages.
The sea front is also home to the popular Sea-life aquarium. This educational and fun park is a great place to see the natural wildlife of the sea. It's a place to see many species of sea life without disrupting their lives or putting yourself in danger to view these magnificent creatures.
For those who want to learn a water sport, check out the Southend Marine Activities Center. The center has courses in jetskiing, sailing, powerboat driving, and windsurfing. They also provide a base for a variety of activities. This center doesn't have any activities for the extremely young, so they do not allow children younger than nine to participate in their courses. If you already know how to do some of the activities that you are interested in performing at this center they also offer improver courses to help those familiar with the activity become better at it or reacquainted with it. Also if you are planning on taking a course at the center you are expected to know how to swim prior to taking the course.
Interested in culture as well as fun, and then visit one of their four museums. The Central Museum is housed in the original 1906 library. Here you can find displays on local wildlife, history and archeology. The Central Museum is also the headquarters for cataloguing, conservation, and enquiries are handled.
The Planetarium is also another great museum to visit while in Southend on Sea. During the forty minute program you can explore the evening sky while being guided through the stars and constellation by a trained guide.
If you are looking for a nice religious museum then look no further than the Priory Museum. The Prior Museum is located in the restored Cluniac Priory. The play was originally built during the twelfth century and then restored in the 1920s. If you are feeling particularly romantic this building is licensed for marriages.
Southend on Sea is sun and surf as well as excitement and culture.
