The town of Slough is just one of the lovely burgs in the county of Berkshire. What makes Slough unique, however, is the fact that it is both one of the largest and one of the most diverse in the entire United Kingdom. Slough is home to over one hundred thousand people and these people make up the most ethnically diverse towns in England aside from London and its melting pot of culture. Another interesting fact about Slough is that it is actually a fairly recent town as far as towns go and it was actually created by taking parts of other cities. Here's an example: The town of Buckinghamshire was once larger than it is now and this is due to the fact that part of Buckinghamshire actually became the town of Slough. Another part of Slough used to be a piece of the town of Middlesex.
What makes this fact even stranger, though, is that Slough itself actually dates back to the 1100s when it was referenced in passing in a few dusty old tomes. This Slough is not quite the Slough we all know and love, though. It was instead a small hamlet that was home to a small population near Upton. All the same, the town did grow over time but by the time it became Slough as we know it it wasn't exactly in the same location of that once quaint hamlet.
One can definitely say that Slough is a large city now. Much of the city is filled with office buildings and factories and the town has seen quite a bit of development in the twenty-first century which means that Slough is arguably more beautiful and new than it has ever been. If one were to point out one of Slough's low points, though, it would no doubt be during the Great Depression. It was during these years that Slough saw some truly rough times and the town became a home for displaced and homeless Welsh immigrants. Curiously enough, this marked the first time that Slough started to become more diverse ethnically. After the two World Wars Slough began to be filled with people from nations like India, Pakistan, and Barbuda. From then on it was a direct route to diversity and it is clear that Slough will become even more of a melting pot as the years go on. It is truly a relief, however, to note that Slough has a rather low crime rate considering the fact that so many people of so many different backgrounds live together in a fairly close knit area. This is a testament to the mostly kind and friendly people who call Slough home and it is perhaps a long lost relic from the days when Slough was some kind of small hamlet tucked away in the thickets. Either way, one can definitely say that Slough is a place worth visiting as well as worth living in and anybody who has yet to lay eyes on Slough would be wise to plan a trip immediately.
