Other accommodation near Sidmouth

Sidmouth Devon is a quaint regency town that overlooks the Lyme Bay. Sidmouth is an unspoiled town that has maintained its old world charm. It does not house the modern architecture that can be seen filling the seafronts and promenades of many of the other modern seaside towns.

Annually during the summer Sidmouth has a Folk Festival. This festival takes over the town with a sea of music and colour. On the promenades there are Morris dancers, fire eaters, lyre players and other musicians all mixed together with the attendees.

Sidmouth finds protections in its sandstone cliffs and location in a valley. Where the Sid River flows to the beach used to be a harbor. The town saw a long succession of bad weather in the 15th century that made some land slide off the cliffs and block the harbor forever. In 1810 there was talk of rebuilding the harbor.

The plan called for a great amount of stone to be moved from Sidmouth to the area and a railway was built for this purpose. Visitors can still view the railway and tunnels where stone was mined. The plan was eventually thrown to the waste side. Even though they managed to build a railway in some of the most challenging terrain the tunnel that was built for the train proved to not be wide enough for it to safely travel through. This miss step lead to the railway construction being abandoned and therefore the rebuilding of the harbor.

The architecture in Sidmouth has a grand history. There are many examples of the Regency Period with the wrought iron balconies and facades painted white. There are over five hundred buildings that have been officially listed as historical and they include a wide range of styled from various eras .Some of the best building Sidmouth has to offer were built during the 18th century. The multitude of small cottages with stone foundations that were originally built for servants still have their thatched roofing and cob walling. This architecture is complemented by the town many magnificent gardens and displays of flowers
