The county of Devon has plenty of gorgeous and scenic towns that offer visceral thrills beyond belief. As such, it can be quite a chore trying to find the perfect seaside town that best captures the essence of Devon. The town of Seaton, however, is in good standing if one is seeking an evocative picture of a Devon seascape. Seaton is in fact surrounded by water on nearly all sides. The famed Lyme Bay offers one of the prettiest horizons around and a look to the west will show the gorgeous River Axe. Devon is well known for its beautiful natural features which include tall cliffs of differing colors and the town of Seaton is no exception to these treasures. On one side of the town you can see tall, imposing red cliffs while on the other side one is treated to the view of the gorgeous white chalk cliffs that dot the edge of Devon and lead all the way to the famed White Cliffs of Dover.
With such natural beauty it is little wonder that Seaton is such a popular tourist and holiday destination. It isn't just scenery that draws people to this little slice of coastal whimsy, though. Seaton (and much of Devon) sits comfortably amid the world famous Jurassic Coast. Also known as the World Heritage Coastline, this stretch of beach is one of the most important locations in the history of our planet. It is beneath this fertile earth that fossils dating to the Jurassic Era and beyond can be found. Not surprisingly, millions of people come each year to this area in order to lay eyes on some of the oldest relics on the face of the planet. Whether it is archeologists, anthropologists, or simply history buffs everybody who comes to the Jurassic Coast leaves feeling a bit smaller and more insignificant in the grand scheme of things. Those going through an existential crisis currently would be advised to postpone the vacation just a bit longer!
One of the most popular sections of the Jurassic Coast is right near Seaton. It is the famed " Geological Walk Through Time". Essentially, the Walk Through Time is a stretch of the coast that has rock formations from three different eras. When taking the path you can effectively say that you've walked through over a million years of history. Seaton is not exactly what you would call a large town, though. The population is less than ten thousand and the city itself looks rather quaint and pleasant. During holidays and tourist season, though, Seaton explodes in size and popularity as people from all around the world fly, drive, and ride the railways into this fascinating burg. As such, it is important to plan in advance if you are contemplating visiting Seaton yourself. Fret not, though. No matter how many people are in town and no matter which hotels are booked you can rest confident knowing that you will have embarked on an adventure millions of years in the making.
