The town of Saltash is nothing if not historic and this makes sense considering the fact that the town is located in the county of Cornwall. Cornwall makes up the southwestern peninsula and over half a million people call this gorgeous swath of land home. What many of these people aren't aware of, however, is the fact that Cornwall has been inhabited for thousands and thousands of years and relics dating back to the Paleolithic Era have been uncovered in this stunningly ancient paradise. What makes Cornwall truly interesting, however, is the fact that it was only slightly controlled by ancient Rome. Most other parts of Great Britain were heavily dominated by Roman influence and thus the more inland areas of the country all have a history that is somewhat homogenous. Even the name Britain is taken from the Latin word Britannia. Cornwall, on the other hand, had a much more independent existence during those days and was more influenced by the ancient Celts. Thus, Cornwall is recognized to this day as a Celtic nation by its inhabitants as well as most of the rest of England. It is in this historic area, then, that we find the equally historic town of Saltash.

Saltash is definitley Cornish in its day to day machinations. It is considered to be the "Gateway to Cornwall" since it is so close to the borders. It is also the largest town in East Cornwall and also one of the largest towns in Cornwall as a whole. Over fifteen thousand people call the town home and, like most residents of Cornwall, many of these people have a wonderful grasp on the history of Saltash. This doesn't mean that the people in Saltash are stuffy, educated types, though; on the contrary, Saltash is filled to the brim with exciting events all year round. Each May the town hosts the beloved Saltash Mayfair. This fun celebration can be found on and around Fore Street and the preparations taken for the bash are epic in order to ensure that each subsequent year is more fun than the last. Not surprisingly, people come from all around to take part in the festivities and Saltash's already considerably sizable population jumps even higher during this time. The Saltash Town Regatta creates a similar effect. Each Summer, the Waterside hosts this thrilling event which includes live music, boat races, rides, and much more. Rowing is in fact one of the most popular diversions in Saltash and the Caradon Pilot Gig Rowing team is just one of the many water sports-oriented clubs in the town. Thus, Saltash strikes that perfect balance of fun and history that is a trademark of the finest towns in Cornwall. It shouldn't come as a surprise to find out that Saltash is fun for the whole family and it is truly a shame that more towns aren't as well balanced as this little slice of paradise on the English Channel. If you have yet to lay eyes on this wondrous town, you are doing yourself and your loved ones an extreme disservice.
