Salisbury in Wiltshire is most famous for its location on the edge of the Salisbury Plain. This is an area of Chalk plateau in southern England covering more than 750square km. It is famous for the archeological finds here and includes one of the most well known sites around the world, namely, Stonehenge.
It is easy to get to and from Salisbury by bus and car. Buses take you to Southampton, Andover and Bournemouth at regular intervals 7 days a week.
If you like to come in by boat you will be well served as Salisbury lies close or even on 5 different rivers of which one (Avon) flows into the sea at Christchurch.
When you are in the heart of Salisbury you will be hard pressed to get away from Poultry cross on Market Square. This was originally built in the 15th century as a marking where the poultry stands would be allowed to set stall at the market. If you want something older you can go to the pub called "The Haunch of Venison" where a 14th century mummified hand is on display. This hand disappeared in 2004, but has since then been recovered under mystifying circumstances. It is believed that Churchill and Eisenhower sat here together discussing D-Day plans.
After having a drink here toasting to Churchill and Eisenhower it is well worth to check out the Salisbury Cathedral on Cathedral Close. This Cathedral has led a nomadic life as it was first erected on a different location in the 11th century. In the 12th century it was re built at the current location close to the Salisbury and South Wiltshire museum. This is housed in the "King's House" a Grade 1 listed building from the 13th century. It has an interactive Stonehenge display amongst many other attributes worthwhile visiting.
After a walk on the Bishops trail close to the city you can cap off a day with a visit to Salisbury Racecourse which is one of the nicest courses to visit because of the layout of the course and the friendliness of the staff.
