Moffat, which is also named Am Magh Fada in the Scottish version of the Gaelic language, is a spa town that once was a burgh. Moffat is located in Dumfries and Galloway in Scotland, near the Annan river. Moffat has a population of about 2,500 people.
Due to Moffat being a spa town it is an ideal place to relax in. You will be able to undergo soothing treatments and enjoy swimming in pools - outdoor or indoor, and you will also be able to jog or stroll around the small town, which has a very green surrounding with many trees, where you can have a picnic in. Moffat is also ideal due to its small size, which allows you to have all the amenities you are used to and that you require and want during a vacation, but still being able to avoid the hustle and bustle of a big city.
Also due to being a spa town you will be able to take your kids and family to various activities which will keep you in shape and in good health, and will keep you busy during your stay.
Moffat is also famous for being the place in which the Devil's Beef Tub is located in, which was used as a place to hide stolen cattle in, in the earlier days of Moffat.
Another point of interest include the Moffat House Hotel, which was designed by John Adam and is near the famous Star Hotel, which got a record in the Guinness Book of Records as the narrowest hotel in the entire world, due to it being 20 feet (or 6 meters) wide.
Moffat is also famous for the Clan Moffat and for the Clan Johnstone, who lived around this area and were active in its past.
Moffat started to grow during the 17th Century when it was turned from a small village into the spa town it is now. The town of Moffat was turned into a spa town because it had sulfurous waters that people believed in those days could heal the body, and any healing technique during the Victorian era, when it was turned into a spa town, was very sought after and popular. Due to the big demand a pipe was built that led from the well to a bath house that was located in the town's center, where the town hall now stands, and after that hotels started springing up to accommodate the high influx of tourists to Moffat.
One of the hotels was built as early as 1878, which is the Hydropathic Hotel, but it was destroyed during a fire in the year 1921, and you can no longer visit it, but you can visit other historical hotels that were built around that era.
You can also visit the well itself, instead of a hotel or a spa. The well was refurbished during the 1990s, and is easily reachable by car. But if you decide to visit the well itself, be advised that it has a strong smell of sulfur.
