Milton Keynes in Buckinghamshire is what you could call a "new kid on the block" it only started life as a town less than 50 years ago when towns like Bletchley, Wolverton and Stony Stratford where combined together with another 15 villages to make up a new town. Bletchley might ring a bell to you as it was home of the code crackers of the Enigma during World War 11.
The name Milton Keynes comes from a village located a few miles west of the final place of the town centre.
Being less than 100km form London makes it easy to get to and from MK (as Milton Keynes is often shortened). There is the M1 motorway nearby and buses regularly stop in MK. London Luton airport is not that far and there is a direct link with Birmingham International Airport. There are no widespread train links yet, mainly because the real town is only in existence for less than 50 years.
MK used to have a population of only 40.000 until the formation of the new town. Now the population is closing in on the 200000 mark and further growth is anticipated. There was a rule at its intervention that there would be no building higher than the highest tree, but because of the fact that a committee thought it wise to have landmark buildings this idea was scrapped later. There are now 14 storey buildings to be watched here in the business district. Despite the fact that the town is brand new the area has a rich history with evidence dating back to the iron-age.
The most fascinating part of MK is the design of the streets. They are built using street hierarchy plans using a grid pattern of approximately 1 km interval, rather than on the more conventional radial pattern found in older settlements. Major roads within the town run between communities, rather than through them: the major roads are known locally as grid roads and the spaces between them are known as grid squares.
This means that all the areas are clearly recognizable as separate communities and this gives an autonomous feeling for every resident of each said community. There was hope that cycling would become big in MK, with cycle paths being built, but most of these pathways are more scenic routes than straight lines. This has led to the amount of cyclist commuting to work falling way below the national average. MK is home to the National Bowl which is a concert area for over 65000 people just off the A5 road. Inside the town the MK theatre is spectacular as it has 1400 seats, but for more intimate productions the roof can be lowered to close of the third tier of seats. The MK Public Art Gallery is right next to the theatre, so you do not have to walk far to see both. In MK you do not need to walk far in most cases, anyway as everything was designed to be located closely together. This means that shopping centre, theatre, art gallery, two multiplex cinemas, hotels, business district, ecumenical church, Borough Council offices and central railway station are all within easy walking distance of each other.
