In the country of Derbyshire is the town of Matlock a hive of history and culture offering things to see and do for all ages and areas of interest, ensuring Matlock is the perfect place to enjoy any sort of holiday or break.
Situated on the edge of the Peak District National Park, Matlock offers a vast array of stunning walks and countryside views and the location on the River Derwent offers you great opportunities to enjoy waterside attractions. Previously known as a spa town, Matlock has a rich history to enjoy. Beginning with the introduction of hydrotherapy to the town where the 'Hydro' building was constructed, now the city council building. Matlock hosted an extensive range of spa treatments and therapies, however most of this has dwindled in the city, but the history remains. A visit to Riber Castle, the imposing, mock medieval castle that overlooks the town, will offer you an insight into the life of John Smedley, the main to have introduced the 'Hydro' building. Previously ran as a zoo, Riber Castle is currently closed to direct-access, however remnants of the zoo still remain. Animal activist's were known to have released several Lynx from the zoo, which escaped into the wild, leading to the myth of the "beast of Lumsdale", which is certainly worth looking out for!
There are brilliant facilities in Matlock for leisure and recreation, with the recently refurbished Hall Leys Park, in the centre of the town, offering tranquil strolls as well as some great sports, such as tennis, crazy golf and skateboarding. Matlock also hosts a great range of retail outlets, with some independent, quirky shops inter-mixed with some high street chains. There are a great range of pubs, restaurants and cafes to enjoy eating out in and there is a vibrant nightlife to be entertained by.
The transport links to Matlock are fantastic, with direct trains running from Derby and regular bus services throughout the day. Peak Rail also run a preserved railway, from the Matlock Riverside to Rowsley South, with many steam operated services. Children and adults alike will love the nostalgic feel.
