Other accommodation near Margate

Founded in 1264 as Meregate, Margate Kent has become an active seaside resort. For the last two hundred fifty plus years Margate has been a mecca for English vacationers far and wide.

The beaches are of course the biggest reason visitors descend on Margate during the summer months. There are life guards on the beaches to help ensure that your fun in the sun is a safe and happy time. During the spring, fall and winter (if you should so choose to wander to the beach) dogs are allowed to visit the water front. During the summer months, however, dogs are banned from the beach. This is to ensure that there are no pet related accidents for all of those happy beach goers.

But the beach is not the only thing for you to do during your stay. For those with kids check out Dreamland, this amusement park has several rides for the young and young at heart. It is also home to the United Kingdom's oldest wooden rollercoaster, The Scenic Railway. At this time it is still waiting to be restored after a sever fire in 2008. There are those that would love to see the coaster renovated and reopened but as of now it hasn't happened.

Another place to visit is the Shell Grotto. This subterranean passageway winds for about seventy feet ending in the alter chamber which is approximately fifteen feet by twenty feet. About half way down the passage the passage divides to pass around a column called the rotunda. The rotunda as well as the passageway is completely covered with some four million seashells, hence the name of the passage. There is no known reason for the passage way although there are many theories. It was discovered in 1835 and has become a tourist destination. While visiting the grotto you can grab a bite to eat, check out the gift shop, and visit the grotto museum.

If you want some culture to go with your fun in the sun check out one of the two theaters. Theatre Royal of Addington street is the second oldest theatre in the country. The Tom Thumb Theater is the second smallest theater in the country. You can most certainly catch a show at either of these fine theaters. For those that love music visit during July and attend the jazz music festival.

Margate in Kent is the place for beach lovers. There are a few other things to enjoy but this town is known for its sun and surf.
