The market town of Machynlleth in the Dyfi Valley was once considered the ancient capital of Wales, even if it was never substantiated, but it was the seat of Owain Glyndwr's Welsh Parliament in 1404. Because of its rich history the town has many things to offer visitors to this market town.

One of the most historical buildings in all of Machynlleth is the Parliament House. This building shows traces of the Roman influence on the town. The medieval traces can be seen throughout the town but really shine in this building.

You can also see the medieval influences in the Royal House at the intersection of Penrallt Street and Grasiwn Lane. The Royal House now sports a shop front but the rest of the building was figured to be built some time during the 1300s. The Royal House claims to have had Charles I to stay in it in the 1600s but is now the home of the tourist information desk.

During your stay at Machynlleth be sure to check out the Wales Museum of Modern Arts. The Museum of Modern Art is housed in a Wesleyan Chapel. With six exhibition spaces there is a rotating selection of artists' works. Each year the public as well as expert judges choose one of these artists as the winner of the Tabernacle Art Competition.

There are some permanent collection which includes works from artists such as Stanley Spencer, Wyndham Lewis, and Augustus John. These works are shown in rotation during the year so seeing your favorite might be difficult unless you can get an idea of when it's going to be shown in the gallery.

Also held at the Museum of Modern Art in late August is the Machynlleth Festival. During this time you can enjoy a variety of music exhibitions as well as lectures on the Celtic culture. During the festival the Award for Outstanding Contribution of Arts in Wales is awarded.

Beautiful architecture, culture and a quiet atmosphere allows visitors to enjoy the city of Machynlleth.
