Looe Hotels and Guest Houses

Looe Cornwall is located on both sides of the River Looe. During medieval times the two sides were separate towns called East and West Looe. East Looe is home to the harbor and main shopping center. While West Looe is much quieter is also includes many shops, eateries and accommodations.

The two sides are joined together by seven bridges that arch over the river. They were built in 1853 to replace the bridge built in the 15th century. The town has been considered a popular holiday resort for more that 200 years. It has been mostly supported by its tourist industry since the sixties when the pilchard canning factory was shut down.

Due to the very narrow streets in the town it is recommended that visitors park by the entrance and walk to their destination. It is also possible to get into town using the railway from Liskeard. The railway goes through a very scenic route going through the countryside and following along the river.

Looe is home to one of the biggest New Year's celebrations in the United Kingdom. Each year dressed up party goers fills the cities streets, restaurants and bars. A magnificent fireworks show is given at midnight from the banjo pier. It is enjoyed by people both on the promenade and the beach. There is also a great view from across the river at Hannafore

Visitors can enjoy watching the fishing boats in the harbor while they unload there catches of the day. When the little fishing fleet arrives it can be a busy and colorful occasion. The fish they catch are on the menus of many of the cities restaurants. One of the best places to witness the returning fleet is from banjo pier but is not recommended during bad weather.

There are also boating and fishing trips that can be scheduled for tourist from the harbor. Tourists can go shark fishing but are only allowed to tag the sharks not kill them. Also there are many beaches to be enjoyed including one near banjo pier in East Looe and Hannafore Beach in West Looe. If the weather is bad visitors can always go to one of the many museums or other indoor attractions.
