Londonderry is often referred to as the Maiden city because during in 1689 during the Siege of Derry its walls were not breached. It is located in Northern Ireland and is the second largest city in that region and the fourth in all of Ireland. It is located nestled between the River Foyle's west bank and old Derry on its east bank with the current city taking up both banks.

The city district extends to include the rural areas in the southeast. The population of the Derry City Council area as of 2006 was 107,300 but when you include the outlying areas that fall with in 20 miles the population jumps to 237,000.

Londonberry is known as the northwest's most popular shopping areas. It is home to two big shopping malls and also has many shops packed into its streets throughout the country. The two malls are located in the heart of the city. The Foyleside Shopping Center has 45 different stores and can hold up to 1430 vehicles. The Richmond Center has 39 stores.

There is also the Quayside and Lisnagelvin Shopping Centers. Recently the Crescent Link Retail Park was added and has many international chain stores. Even though it is new it has quickly become the second largest space of its kind in Northern Ireland.

Londonberry is also the home of the oldest independent department store in the world called Austins. Austins is 15 years older than Harrods of London and 25 years older than Macy's in New York. The store has five stories and is set in an Edwardian building an area of the city known as The Diamond.

Also there are several museums and other interesting sites around the city. They included the Amelia Earhart Center and Wildlife Sanctuary, the Foyle Valley Railway Center, Ballyoan Cemetery, the Apprentice Boys Memorial Hall and the Bogside. There are plans in the works for a Walled City Signature Project that will preserve the walls of the city and hopes to make them one of the world's premiere tour attractions. Tourism is giving the city a much needed economical boost.
