Llanberis is easily among the most popular and most beloved tourist destinations in all of Wales. Its fortunate placement at the base of the famed Mount Snowdon most definitely has something to do with Llanberis' prestige as the town essentially falls within the Snowdonia National Park. As such, Llanberis is treated to some of the most phenomenal natural wonders in Europe. Chief among these is the slate quarries that mix with the natural lakes and rivers around Llanberis and create some truly astonishing visual spectacles.
Llanberis is also home to the gorgeous Padarn Country Park. Anybody paying a visit to Llanberis would do well not to pass up this lovely heaven on Earth. Aside from a handful of scenic lakeside picnic sites, the park is home to a fantastic nature reserve that will thrill even the most jaded of purveyors. Not far from the park is another terrific tourist site: The beloved Llanberis Lake Railway. This is one of the most exciting aspects of Llanberis and it would be a crime of the highest order to go to Llanberis on holiday and not take part in this fun little diversion. This hour long trip through the Llanberis village allows you to see nearly all of the lake and then neatly places you right next to yet another terrific tourist attraction: The Welsh Slate Museum.
The Welsh Slate Museum, despite its name, is not so much a museum in the traditional sense of the word so much as it is a representation of the remnants of the once burgeoning slate trade that used to be the life blood of Llanberis. The site stands on what was once the Dinorwick Slate Quarry workshop. This location still has the old tools of the trade: Saw mills, foundries, smithies, and carpenter shops are still standing as a testament to the storied history of Llanberis.
If you're feeling particularly adventurous, you can take on the Snowdon Mountain Railway. This railway was built in the 1890s as a way to allow people to take in the fantastic scenery from atop Snowdon Mountain. This may not seem like such a phenomenal feature until one considers the fact that Snowdon is the tallest mountain in all of England and Wales. Thankfully, nobody needs to manually climb the mountain to lay eyes on the top now that the expertly crafted railway delivers you right to the peak with no effort whatsoever.
Llanberis is a lot of things to a lot of people. It is a place of astonishing natural beauty but it is also a place of therapeutic relaxation. Some people visit it to learn about the wonders of nature while others visit to partake in exciting water sports without even considering the massive mountain just behind them. No matter what draws you to Llanberis, however, the fact of the matter is that once you step foot into this hallowed land of wonder you will have trouble going back home. Llanberis is not for the faint of heart, but upon visiting you may either faint or lose your heart forever.
