Other accommodation near Lichfield

Though it is a mere thirty miles or so from busting Birmingham and an hour's drive from London, Lichfield is the kind of town that shrugs off the influence of its bigger brothers and instead maintains its own identity rather admirably. With a population that barely tops thirty thousand, there are no problems with congestion or pollution in this idyllic burg. Rather, beautiful churches and buildings adorn the town and give Lichfield the austere aura of a gorgeous town lost in time.

Much of the historical nature of Lichfield has to do with the sheer amount of stunning events that have taken place in the area. Legend has it that the town got its name after a horrific massacre of over three hundred Christians in a field that is now present day Lichfield. This event is said to have taken place around 300 A.D. which of course would put it in the timeframe of the Roman Empire's last throes. Though there were most definitely some murdered Christians under the reign of Diocletian, there is no definitive proof that this specific event occurred but, whether it did or not, the name of Lichfield translates into "the field of the dead". Though it is a rather morbid legacy to carry on, one can't argue that the name isn't attention-grabbing.

Though the early days of Lichfield were seemingly wary of Christianity, the town quickly became enamored with this new religion and within a couple of hundred years there were cathedrals scattered all about Lichfield that were in many cases the most impressive in the surrounding area. Bishop Hedda was the first person to construct a church in Lichfield in 700 and from then on Lichfield was on the name of many a Christian tongue. Unfortunately, the town's relative peace would be shattered by Viking invaders a mere hundred years later. Lichfield was in a state of chaos during this time and it wasn't until Henry VIII came about in the Middle Ages that the town would once again be a semblance of what it used to be. The boosting of the town's economy by Henry allowed Lichfield to coast into the new century with comfort and poise and even more churches began to be erected all around town.

Though Lichfield still maintains much of its classic design there is proof that the town is undergoing a major renovation. In 2009 plans were enacted to create a massive new town square that would effectively reshape the town into something both current and modern. The timing was of course dreadful in light of the global recession that followed soon after and the lofty goal of creating a brand new downtown area of Lichfield has been put on the backburner for a while. This may be seen as a defeat to people seeking night life in Lichfield but the many people who are enthralled with the history of the town are no doubt thrilled that the town will maintain much of its beauty, at least for a little while longer.
