First founded in 1156 Jervaulx abbey was originally a Cistercian abbey. When the monasteries were dispersed by King Henry the VIII he also closed Jervaulx abbey and sold it. King Henry the VIII then redistributed the abbey's wealth. While the lead roof was removed and is ruined, pieces of the abbey were salvaged and have been placed in the construction of local churches. There is a great deal of wildflowers and vegetation that has grown over the area but this treasure can still be seen.
