The town of Launceston is one of the most historically significant locations in not just the county of Cornwall but in the entire United Kingdom. Nearly every aspect of this ancient borough is either fascinating or important in some capacity and we as a nation are truly blessed that many of the incredible relics from years gone by are still visible and tangible in modern-day Launceston.

Launceston was one of the first places where Cornwall coins were minted and this would have been around the tenth century when Cornwall was given its own jurisdiction. Before and after this time there is a trend of Launceston being an immediate and significant part of whatever empire or ruler was in control at the time. Launceston Castle is a great example of this: It was constructed during the peak of the Norman empire and to this day it is the most imposing and noticeable part of the town. This is truly a testament to the superior craftsmanship of the motte-and-bailey Norman design that the castle still stands proudly and boldly in the face of centuries of progress after the fact. It is surmised that this castle was built during the 1070s. Launceston would once again be the home to a mint when Henry III became the ruler and its popularity and importance would continue to be at its maximum. Launceton is particularly revered in the county of Cornwall and it is even considered a "gateway" to Cornwall due to its proximity to the county's border. This has also been a big factor in the reputation of Launceston as one of the most indispensable parts of the United Kingdom.

Launcestons' prominence was perhaps at its highest during the English Civil War. Charles I, the king who would be put to death at the end of this bloody struggle, bestowed a special coat of arms on Launceston because of the town's faithfulness and loyalty to him. Even the famed Prince of Wales, the son of Charles I, stayed in the town during this time and used it as a base during his surge against the Parliamentarians. Unfortunately, the Parliamentarians were themselves planning to meet the Prince and a massive battle ensued right on the soil of Launceston. Many soldiers on both sides were killed but the Royalists ended up winning by a very slim margin. Launceston is also the home of the only document signed by Queen Mary and her husband William Orange. This has also made Launceston a significant and beloved part of the United Kingdom and to this day it continues this tradition admirably. Though it doesn't play as large a part in the working machinations of the nation as it once did, Launceston is important simply for the vast wealth of history that can be found in nearly every corner of the town. England as we know it wouldn't exist were it not for Launceston and its consistent presence in the country throughout history and for this reason the town is worthy of the highest esteem and regard possible.
