Other accommodation near Dunoon

On the Cowell Peninsula, between the Holy Loch and the Firth of Clyde, one can find the lovely waterfront resort town of Dunoon. This city has been linked with tourism for much of its life and to this day thousands flock to its shore each year to take part in the many fun and exciting activities that have made Dunoon famous around the world.

The most popular landmark in Dunoon is unquestionably the Queen's Hall. This complex is home to a grand hall and four deluxe suites and its placement at the head of Dunoon's pier makes it a prime spot for the best entertainment that Dunoon has to offer and, with such artists as Pink Floyd, The Saw Doctors, and Blur performing at the Hall, Dunoon certainly has much entertainment to offer. Dunoon Pier itself is a large draw, though, and most of the people who flock to the Queen's Hall make sure that they stroll around this fascinating area at length. Built in 1835, the Pier is rich with history and even though the paddleboats that once permeated the area are long gone, monuments and landmarks still dot the esteemed pier detailing the interesting past that the Pier was privy to.

The Pier's age only scratches the surface of Dunoon's rich cultural heritage, though. Castle Toward, for instance, is one of the most admirable edifices in all of Argyll and it is still used to great length these days as an outdoor education center. A younger but arguably more fascinating landmark, though, would be the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. This sprawling garden is thankfully open to the public, allowing countless tourists to lay eyes on some of Britain's most impressive flora. Many of the largest trees in the country are found in the 150 acres of the garden including the Giant Redwoods that are over thirty-seven meters in height in many cases.

Though Dunoon has a remarkably rich past, its biggest claim to fame is a bit more dubious. During the Cold War, the city's placement near the Holy Loch made it subject to some of the most divisive struggles to arise between the competing superpowers. In 1961, Dunoon welcomed the U.S. Navy with open arms, allowing the country to bring submarines and ballistic missiles to the city and the Navy's Submarine Squad 14 called the Holy Loch home for over thirty years afterwards. After the fall of the Berlin Wall and the crumbling of the Soviet Union, the U.S. Navy pulled out of Dunoon and the city saw a downturn in the economy very quickly. Fortunately, Dunoon is now back on stable legs and no foreign presence can dictate the city's livelihood. The population is on the rise and new homes and neighborhoods are being built constantly, proving that Dunoon is not only back on top but more fruitful than it has been in centuries. As more and more tourists flock to Dunoon each year, they will see a city that is growing in both size and beauty and one can only hope that this trend continues unabated for the foreseeable future.
