County Down, or Down as it is often called, is one of Ireland's premier counties and one of the most beautiful in a land filled to the brim with beautiful sights and spectacles. As beautiful as it is, Down is more than just a pretty face. It is home to over half a million people and one of the most integral parts of the United Kingdom. Down can be seen as essentially "southeast Ireland" since its area reaches both to the most southern part of the country as well as the most eastern part. The east side is particularly ravishing, though, because it offers an unimpeded and incredibly beautiful view of the Irish Sea.
Down is rather interesting in the fact that the majority of its citizens identify themselves as Protestants. Nearly every other county is dominated by Catholics and only one other county, Antrim, has Protestants as its majority. This may not seem like an extremely notable fact until one remembers that Ireland has seen perhaps the worst instances of Catholic and Protestant fighting in the history of the world. At any rate, one can definitely use the word "interesting" to describe Down.
County Down is home to some downright stellar geography. The famed Mourne Mountains are located here and they are among the most celebrated in history with artists like Percy French and many others penning odes and songs about these incredible creations. Slieve Donard is probably the most popular peak in the vast Mourne Mountains and, at eight hundred and forty nine meters above sea level, it is the highest point in Northern Ireland.
It isn't just natural features that draw countless people to County Down, though. Some of the most impressive parts of the town are actually wrought by the hands of man. The Old Inn itself is a building that could have multiple volumes written about it. It is said that this inn dates back to the year 1614 but nobody is positive about its exact birth. At any rate, it is famous around the country for the countless famous individuals who have stayed at the inn. Jonathan Swift was a patron as was Dick Turpin, one of the most famous outlaws in the world and something of an English Jesse James or Billy the Kid. The famed poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson was also known to have honeymooned there and even Charles Dickens stayed in the Old Inn! The Down Cathedral is also very popular among tourists and it isn't just for the beauty of the church. It is said that none other than the Irish hero Saint Patrick is buried there. While this may just be a rumor it nonetheless has helped to further boost the tourist industry in County Down. Essentially, it can be said that Down is the kind of county in which anything is possible and anyone can find something that they enjoy. This is exactly the kind of thing that a county should represent and it is truly admirable that County Down is still home to so many people after countless generations have come and gone before.
