Other accommodation near Coleford

The town of Coleford is nothing if not charming and, thanks to its proximity to the England/Wales border, it carries with it that extra touch of history that is a trademark of many of the charming towns that find themselves near the dividing line between two very distinct and fascinating cultures and countries. The border between England and Wales is a particularly fruitful place for a town like Coleford to find itself and this is due not only to the interesting human history in the area but also for the stunning natural features and landscapes in this area. Coleford is very close to the Wye Valley, for instance, and anybody familiar with this part of England knows that the Valley and its surrounding area is a highly beloved place for walking, canoeing, hiking, and any number of healthy and environmentally friendly activities. This shouldn't come as a surprise, though, since the Wye Valley is one of the several spots in England fortunate enough to be deemed an "Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty". The River Wye is also the fifth longest running river in the United Kingdom so, not surprisingly, Coleford enjoys quite a bit of tourist activity as people from both sides of the border flock to the area to take part in the ravishing natural fun scattered throughout the landscape.

Coleford falls within the limits of the Forest of Dean and this too makes the town highly desirable to visitors and outsiders. After all, the Forest of Dean is filled to the brim with fascinating historical relics that date back to the Mesolithic Era and beyond. Much of the forest has been maintained so that wanderers can marvel at the ancient woods that are among the oldest in England. Where does Coleford stand within all of this, though? Well, Coleford is one of the oldest cities in one of the oldest forests in the world and thus it is looked upon and spoken of in hushed tones of reverence by its surrounding towns and cities.

Most of the architecture in Coleford dates back to the days of Georgian design and this makes the town look even more unique than it already is when compared to its neighbours. The Forest of Dean, though historic and indispensable to our national pride, was found to have contained coal several hundred years ago and it began to be mined incessantly around the time of the Industrial Revolution. As such, many towns in the hallowed forest became mining towns and carried with them the typical unattractive features of industry such as pollution and large factories and foundries. Coleford, despite its name, avoided this fate and had little or nothing to do with the dominant trade in the woods. As such, the town always managed to keep its stately beauty even as it saw its neighbours like Cinderford begin to be overtaken by industry. This is perhaps the greatest aspect of Coleford and one that can teach us all a lesson: No matter what is popular and dominant in your culture at any given time, you don't need to be a follower if you do not wish to do so.
