Cockermouth in Cumbria is probably most known for being the birthplace of William Wordsworth. This ancient town, and civil parish of the Borough of Allerdale, has more to it than just the famed poet's birthplace and home.
The towns architecture should be enjoyed. Lost is most of the medieval origins of the town but the areas that were once medieval are now in the Victorian and Georgian style. The cobbled streets twist and turn with the curving lanes, many of which run to the River Cocker, namesake of the town.
When looking for landmarks to enjoy be sure to stop by the Cockermouth Castle. This large Norman castle was once the home of Lady Egremont and is now partly in ruins. The tower tilts in a Pisa like manner over the Jennings Brewery. If you wish to view this magnificent piece of history schedule your stop during the annual town festival. This is the only time in which the castle is open to the public but it is well worth the look.
After visiting the castle you will want to wander next door to the Jennings Brewery. This brewery is open regularly to the public and offers tours of their facilities. During certain times of the year you might also get an opportunity to take part in a carriage ride pulled by an actual shire horse.
The most famous attraction in all of Cockermouth has to be the Wordsworth house. Born in April of 1770 William Wordsworth went on to become one of most influential writers in England. Along with Samuel Taylor Coleridge Wordsworth is credited with launching the Romantic Age in English literature. The Wordsworth house is William Wordsworth's childhood home. Fully restored with a children's rooms and toys of the times and even a working eighteenth century kitchen, this house gives visitor a feel for how Mr. Wordsworth was raised. Opened to the public from March to October this museum must be seen by anyone who is interested in literary history.
If you want culture, then check out the Kirkgate center. Here you can find international music, a world cinema and theatre. The town also hosts an annual festival each summer which features concerts and performances.
Cockermouth, its best known for its famous son, but it is also home to lots of culture and historic sites for visitors to enjoy.
