About a dozen miles from the lovely town of Banbury one can find the quaint and gorgeous village of Chipping Norton. What the town of Chipping Norton lacks in population (the last tally placed the amount of citizens somewhere around the middle five thousands) it more than makes up for in stately and scenic beauty. Much of this beauty has to do with the fact that Chipping Norton is blessed to be a part of the incredible Cotswolds. This range of hills has floored citizens of England and tourists alike with the stellar views offered at nearly every turn. The United Kingdom reserves its official designation of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty for only a few areas and the Cotswolds is definitely worthy of this esteemed recognition.

At any rate, Chipping Norton is located right amid these rolling hills and all around the town are beautiful photo-worthy landscapes. Evidence shows that people have been marveling at the wonders of this area for far longer than many people think, though. A mere two and a half miles from the middle of Chipping Norton is the finest example of proof for this instance. The famed Rollright stones, relics from the megalithic area, are among one of the most fascinating and popular sites that drive countless tourists to Chipping Norton and the Cotswolds each year. These stones look amazing and, while there is no concrete evidence of who exactly placed them originally (owing to the fact that the people from that era are older than many fossils), there is no shortage of myths and legends concocted by the locals to explain the origin of these relics. The most popular story is that the large rock and the smaller ones surrounding it on one of the sites is in fact the petrified remains of a king and his knights who were turned to stone by some form of witch or wizard. These stones have been an important part of the lore of England and during both World Wars soldiers would break off small pieces of these stones to keep in their pockets as it was considered good luck in battle to hold one of these treasures.

Chipping Norton understandably draws many tourists a year but the fact of the matter is that the town has actually been a thriving and wealthy area for over a thousand years! Its roots as a parish town fall in line with many of the cities in the area but Chipping Norton truly experienced prominence in fame during the explosion of the wool trade. Wool was one of the biggest commodities during the Middle Ages and any town with good wool production was king of the hill. The Cotswolds happened to be the prime spot for wool during that era and every town within it managed to build their fortunes large enough to have lavish new buildings with pristine architecture. It is this kind of town we see today in Chipping Norton and it is precisely why many people in fact visit Chipping Norton not to see the Rollright stones but the perfect example of architecture dating from the Middle Ages to the Georgian and Victorian Eras.
