Chester in Cheshire became a city in 1541. It lies on the River Dee and is in close proximity to Wales. The main architectural style you will find here is Victorian and Chester has the largest and longest intact city walls in the United Kingdom. Most of these walls are Grade 1 Listed which makes them "buildings of extreme architectural or historical value". Despite the fact that the people of Chester do not live in the past, they have made it a point not to demolish or deface older buildings. Since 1970 there has been only restoration of older buildings, like the Falcon Inn, and no tear downs.
There is plenty of shopping to be done in Chester and the city is famous for its "rows" which are rows of shops as in any other town or city, but here there are two levels of shops. There are also newer chains and stores of course, mainly in 2 large shopping malls called The Forum and Grosvenor Hall. Grosvenor is a name you will see a lot in Chester and it is the family name of the Duke of Westminster who still owns a large part of the city. Chester may not be Amsterdam, but a large part of its economic success has been attributed to the canals. You can still navigate one of them just along the north walls of the city. If you wander into the city itself you will notice a lot of black and white buildings. This is all part of the Victorian styles used when the main streets of Chester were build. The town Hall and the Cathedral will no doubt make the most impression on you. The town hall has a spire and a spear and was opened in 1869. The Cathedral looks magnificent, but it is not the oldest church in the area as St Paul's, which lays just outside of the city walls, dates back to the 12th Century.
The major park in Chester is the Grosvenor and that is also the name of the largest and most visited museum. As mentioned before this all because of the Duke of Westminster.
Chester has a Football team playing in the football league in England a racecourse that is famous for its Chester Vase Meeting in May.
