Scotland is filled to the brim with gorgeous, picturesque towns and cities that regularly welcome thousands of visitors each year who want to lay eyes on the scenic wonderment that only a country as beautiful as this can provide. Stirling is particularly blessed with amazing scenery and Callander, the humble burg on the River Teith, is a veritable treasure trove of visual splendor.
It is little wonder that Callander is such an appealing sight to behold: After all, the city practically leads you right into the monstrous, phenomenal Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park. This park was the first national park in all of Scotland and is, understandably, a source of pride for the nation. It is little wonder, then, that Callander has earned the honored nickname "the gateway to the Highlands".
Lest you think the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs are the only sources of awe inspiring scenery, a trip to the northern part of Callander will allow your eyes to behold something just as incredible: The Callander Crags. These rocky outcrops positively scream natural wonder and some of them reach almost three hundred and fifty meters high! There are also many fantastic nature walks that visitors and tourists can take part in to further enjoy the blissful surroundings. The Bracklinn falls allows spectators to walk almost right up to these imposing waters and peer down into the rushing depths below. The Trossachs Bird of Prey Trail is also great for more than just bird lovers, as the gorgeous walk will inspire even the most jaded of observers.
As gorgeous as Callander is, however, it is also filled with some of the strangest and most bizarre trivia of any city in England. While England, with its crusty age, certainly lends itself to odd stories, none are as random as many of Callander's claims to fame. The G.I. Joe Franchise, for instance, has a character by the name of Destro who is one of the most evil villains in the fictional universe. This Destro guy hails from none other than Callander and his family has roots in the town extending as far back as the 1400s! While it is surprising that a horrific villain like Destro would come from a land as inviting and friendly as Callander, it is perhaps even more strange that Destro and his lineage haven't left the city in over five hundred years! Another bizarre claim to fame for Callander is the fact that Helen Duncan, a citizen of Callander, was the last person in all of the United Kingdom to be tried and imprisoned for Witchcraft. What is even more astonishing is the fact that World War Two was going on during this time! Perhaps Helen was the mother or grandmother of Destro! At any rate, the strange facts surrounding Callander only add to its mystique and its general sense of wonder. The visual splendor of the city far outweighs its few discrepancies and anybody who wants to see a city of pure natural spectacle would do well to visit Callander today!
