Nearly everybody is familiar with the town of Buckingham and much of this has to do with the famed Buckingham Palace. Though the Palace is without a doubt one of the most significant landmarks on the continent, the sad truth is that Buckingham is not the home of Buckingham Palace. That distinction belongs to London and the Palace was named for the Duke of Buckingham who most assuredly lived here. Though the town can't claim hold on one of the most well-known locations in the world, it can at least lay some claim to the origin of the esteemed building.
With a meager population of about twelve thousand, Buckingham hardly qualifies as a big city but its importance to the inner workings of England can't be overstated. Interestingly enough, Buckingham has been important to England for far longer than many people think. This fact is made evident in the name of the city. Buckingham translates into "meadow of Bucca's people". Bucca, for those not aware, is one of the most important figures in the history of England. He was the first leader of the Anglo-Saxon tribes and he first settled in a location that is now the same site of the famed University of Buckingham. This would have been in the 600s and the next few hundred years would be plagued with the same fighting that troubled much of the new nation of England. Saxons and Danes were very powerful in those days and Buckingham traded hands countless times during these struggles. As such, Buckingham wasn't a true English city until the 1500s.
Though the Palace is sometimes mistakenly sought after by confused tourists, Buckingham has plenty of gorgeous historic buildings that are definitely worth seeing. Most of the buildings date back to the 1700s and, while beautiful, are not the best examples of historic architecture in the area. There is, however, a well that dates back to medieval times. The town is also said to be the final resting site of one of the most underrated saints in Saxon history. Saint Rumwold was thought to have lived only three days but during those three days he supposedly spoke and even professed a wish to be baptized. Though nobody can definitely back this story up it would be incredibly fascinating if it were true. Buckingham is also very popular for fans of football and there are two teams that vie for dominance in the city. There is also a Buckingham Rugby Club as well as the famed Buckingham Athletic F.C. Sports are well-liked in Buckingham and most of the tourists who flock to the city do so for the superior sports venues and competitions that are held regularly in the city. If you are planning a trip to Buckingham please do so because of the stately beauty of the town and not because you are under the notion that you will see Buckingham palace during your visit. You can be reasonably sure that you'll have a great time and see some fascinating sights that you may have otherwise overlooked.
