The town of Beddgelert is, like many of the best and most fascinating Welsh towns, filled to the brim with a sense of history, wonder, and myth. Even the origin of the name of the town is a rich and exciting story: Essentially, Welsh mythology tells of a legendary hound that went by the name of Gelert. Gelert was notable in that he was the pet hound of the famed Welsh hero Llywelyn the Great. Llywelyn was a real figure in Welsh history and was one of the nation's greatest rulers and one of only two leaders of Wales to ever have the surname "the Great" affixed to them. At any rate, it can be reasonably assumed that Gelert never existed. The myth goes that Llywelyn was out hunting one day and had left his infant baby alone in his house. Leaving a baby alone in a cradle may not be the best example of parenting but those were different times. At any rate, Llywelyn returned to find the cradle overturned and Gelert mauling a bloody heap of flesh on the ground. Llywelyn understandably jumped to action and stabbed Gelert to death. In his rage he hadn't noticed that the baby was lying safely near the cradle and Gelert was in fact chewing on the flesh of a wolf that had snuck in and attempted to snatch Llywelyn's offspring. It is said that Llywelyn never smiled again after that.

In Beddgelert there is a raised mound of earth known as "Gelert's Grave". Countless fans of mythology and history come to the town to lay eyes on this historic hill despite the fact that every expert on the subject assures us that there is no dog buried under there and even if there is it is definitely not the fictional Gelert. All the same, there is something to be said for a landmark that has been visited by countless generations throughout history and thus an even richer myth seems to arise out of the whole business. Funnily enough, there is an entire school of thinking that subscribes to the story that Beddgelert is not named after the mythological dog but in fact a Saint Kilart or Celert. At any rate, the fact remains that right on the mound is a beautiful plaque with the inscription of the legend. To think of how many different eyes have scanned the words is an enriching enough experience on its own.

The Welsh mythology is a rich one and Gelert is an indispensable icon of an ancient civilization. There are other cultures with myths strikingly similar and all of them fall under a category known as the "Faithful Hound" motif. In some stories it is a pet mongoose and in others it is a trusty bear mate. At any rate the story is rivaled only by such ubiquitous stories as the Deluge motif for its prevalence in cultural stories throughout time. Whether this faithful hound existed or not does not matter. The fact that it is part of the rich and intertwined tapestry of human storytelling is enough to make Beddgelert a place worthy of legend itself.
