The county of East Sussex in the United Kingdom is home to a wide slew of varying kinds of towns. Part of East Sussex is filled with growing burgs that are among the most important economic sectors in the area while other parts of the county are small hamlets that nevertheless are of an extreme historical importance. Battle seems to lay right in the middle of these generalizations and, as such, it is in the running for the perfect "East Sussex" flavor as far as cities in that county are concerned. A mere fifty miles away from London, Battle sits right outside the broad conurbation that envelops a large radius that juts out from the daunting city limits. Battle is only thirty miles from Brighton which is itself an imposing metropolis but again Battle is fortunate enough to lie right outside the suburban limits. Time will decide whether or not Battle eventually becomes swept up in the urban sprawl that seems to decimate all the outlying regions of London, Brighton, and Birmingham but those who know Battle know that the name is earned rightfully; Battle is a town that doesn't pale from its identity no matter what is in store.

As if to cement its legacy, Battle is the site of one of the most popular and extreme struggles in the history of England. It was on this hallowed ground that the Duke of Normandy, William, fought King Harold II and defeated him in order to become King William I. This was nearly a thousand years ago, in 1066, and this was right around the time that the Saxon lords of the area began to falter and England truly came into prominence. This was also around the time that the newly crowned King William began to order the composition of the Domesday Book which would become the pivotal atlas of the entire country of England.

Not surprisingly, Battle was one of the first towns to have a fully working gunpowder mill. The mill was active by the mid 1600s but visitors these days won't see the mill creating any gunpowder; the building was converted into a hotel recently. Those lamenting the loss of the mill shouldn't complain, though; The mill was never truly a longstanding building and on more than one occasion gunpowder was left cooking too long and caused the building to explode. These days it is easy to visit Battle thanks to the A2100 and of course the Battle Railway Station. Though Battle's tourism industry waxes and wanes it is important to remember that this is in fact one of the oldest cities in the United Kingdom. Battle often gets overshadowed during vacation season because of the many beautiful seaside resort towns and historical lands that occupy the minds of most tourists but anybody with a knowledge of history knows that Battle is a town that fights for its right to exist and that is the highest honor a town can aspire to no matter what continent it finds itself in.
