Ayr, which is called Inbhir Air in the Scottish version of the Gaelic language, which means Mouth of the River Ayr, is a small port town that is located on the Firth of Clyde, at the south-west side of Scotland. Ayr has a population of about 50,000 people, making it the largest settlement in Ayrshire, and making it into a country town. Ayr holds the status of a royal burgh ever since 1205, and serves as an administrative centre for the South Ayrshire council.
Near Ayr there are Prestwick and the Glasgow Prestwick International Airport, as well as Alloway and many other locations, which makes it an ideal place for a tourist who is interested to see as much as he can while on vacation. But the town of Ayr isn't lacking on things to see. Some of the things you might be interested in include the golf and aviation centres north to the town, as well as the neighbouring locations, which are known for their association to the life and work of famous individuals - such as the poet Robert Burns.
Due to Ayr's closeness to the sea, visitors can enjoy and relax in its many beaches, as well as perform exercise there - since it is a sought after exercise location, of both locals and visitors, due to the water and the sights, which make running the coast's stretch much more enjoyable, and a good way to start your morning.
Ayr also offers a leisure centre, which is called The Citadel. The Citadel opened in 1997 on the mouth of the local river, near the south part of the harbour. It has a large main hall which hosts various sporting events - such as football, basketball, netball, volleyball, indoor cricket, indoor hockey, short tennis, and badminton games, among others.
Ayr also offers an outdoor soccer field, and various libraries - both stationary and mobile ones. There are four libraries to choose from, with a wide selection of books.
But if reading on your vacation is not your thing, you can enjoy the sporting events that are being held in the city - which include flat racing at the Ayr Racecourse, which also hosts the National Hunt, and is known for being the largest horse racing arena in Scotland.
You can also visit Somerset Park with your friend and family, or by yourself, and watch the senior football team called the Ayr United F.C. play there. They are a famous team, which has reached the Scottish League Cup twice in a row. The club was formed as early as 1910, and Ayr F.C. were established in 1879.
There is also a rugby union, if you prefer it, whose matches you can watch at the Millbrae.
Ayr also offers volleyball games, being held by the South Ayrshire Volleyball Club, and a swimming pool - the only public on in the town, which has also a diving pool. Other activities include squash, dancing, and visitors can also enjoy the local gym, which will help them keep in shape even while on vacation.
