The River Eden is, like most of England's best and most beautiful rivers, a life giving and nourishing body of water that breathes vigor into every swath of land it touches. How fitting, then, that Appleby-in-Westmorland is situated snugly amid this bountiful body of water and is surrounded on almost all sides by it thanks to the loopthat the Eden makes in this area. Which such an enjoyable atmosphere and some of the finest sunsets this side of Dover, it shouldn't come as any surprise that Appleby enjoys a healthy and vibrant tourism industry. At any given time the amount of residents in Appleby sits
somewhere around three thousand but, if you come at the right time, you'll see countless thrill seekers walking the streets and craning their necks at the endless variety of awe-inspiring sights to be beheld.
Sadly, one of Appleby's most gorgeous edifices is somewhat off limits. The famed Appleby Castle is a drastically important historical monument and though you can gaze at it from the outside nobody is allowed inside except for the private owners. All the same, even looking at Appleby Castle from afar is still a fantastic experience and it is one of the finest and most beautiful examples of a castle built in the classic Norman style of building. The Castle most definitely commands attention and we can only hope that some day everybody will be allowed to take a look inside. In the mean time, though, one can still snap a wonderful photo while standing in front of the looming edifice.
If you go to Appleby at the right time you may get more than you "bargained" for. Every June for over three hundred years straight Appleby has held a wildly popular event known as the Appleby Horse Fair. Naturally it was a more pivotal event in the 1700s when horses were essentially the only form of land transportation but Appleby to this day is very much like it was in those days. There are still few shops or work opportunities and most of Appleby's non-tourist income
is based on selling farm materials to local towns. As such the Horse Fair still carries significance but it is still a fun and exciting event that any tourist would be a fool to miss. Gypsies from all over the United Kingdom flock to Appleby each year for this event in order to sell their wares and this alone is worth the trip. There are of
course plenty of great sights just outside of Appleby and these include such natural and national treasures as the Lake District, Howgill Fells, and the North Pennines. Many people who come to Appleby to see these sights naturally find much to love in Appleby as well as more than enough pleasant and cozy inns. In essence, no matter what your aim is you will find countless thrills and adventures when you visit Appleby. You'll also see a gorgeous and quaint town that is filled to the brim with colorful and lovable individuals.
