Other accommodation near Anstruther

Though the town of Anstruther is what many would consider "small" (it has a population of less than four thousand residents), the impact that the town has on Scotland and the amazing contributions it has made to the world make it very large in a way that is often hard to compete with. It should also be noted that Anstruther's population is a bit misleading because during tourist season the town swells to a much larger head count due to the many desirable aspects of this little slice of heaven on the coastline of the Firth of Forth.

Many people come to Anstruther each year because of the unique treasures that the town offers in spades. Some of the most lush and beautiful golf courses in the country are found in Anstruther and anybody who knows a Scottish person knows that golf is no small hobby in the country. After all, with so much incredible scenery a person would be crazy not to be out in it as often as possible. The hotels are topnotch in Anstruther as well but it is the local food that really drives tourists nuts. Most of the cuisine revolves around fish because Anstruther was once among the most indispensable fishing towns in Scotland. This heritage is made evident by the Scottish Fisheries Museum located in town and most visitors to the town come back simply for the amazing dishes offered by places like the Anstruther Fish Bar, a winner of multiple Sea Fish Organization awards.

It isn't just leisure and dining that draws people to Anstruther, though. The town is quite old and thus there are plenty of historical landmarks and buildings that are of great interest to both historians and archeologists. The aforementioned Fisheries Museum is of course a major draw but the most popular relic these days is the secret nuclear bunker that has been located in the town since 1951. Naturally, this hideaway was not known by the public during the Cold War but it was used as an emergency meeting place if a nuclear attack were to occur during those tumultuous days. After 1993 the bunker was shut down and revealed to the public and these days it is a museum that houses some downright fascinating memorabilia from one of the most eerie times in world history.

Interestingly enough, Anstruther may in fact be more famous for the people that have come out of the town rather than the large amount of people that consistently flock to the beloved town. Anstruther has an abnormally large amount of famous people that once lived there including the famous painter David Martin, the religious hero Dr. Thomas Chalmers, reformer James Melville, and many other luminaries. This just goes to show that Anstruther truly has something that changes and betters the lives of not only its visitors but its residents as well. Knowing this, it is uncomfortably difficult to justify passing up a vacation to this one of a kind wonderland at least once in your life.
